I spent 12 hours on campus doing a project that my group members are too dumb to do. I also forgot to shower. And eat.

Am I the only one around here who likes 12 hour days? I wish my day had only been twelve I got into the office at 545ish and am just getting home now. Granted, I did take a break earlier today to stop by Oppo on a tortoise, so that took up some time.

Keep the faith, bud, week'll be over soon enough!

This week of work and the last might finally be paying for some project parts, so there is a bright spot to it. Mostly it's workaholism and two projects trying their best to run behind.

If it makes you feel better, after this week is over I'll have had one pre-calculus exam, an Anatomy and Physiology exam, and an Anatomy and Physiology lab practical.

Call me when you work 110 in a week. Or 40 hours straight. Or 60 days straight. Or months on end with four days off out of every 28. But I got paid $24k a year, four years out of college, with a doctorate. So I had that going for me.

I don't do any of that anymore, but I still average 70 hours a week and work every fourth weekend. When I work the weekend I still work the whole week. I also take calls one weeknight every other week and work a full schedule the day before and after.

So you worked 12 hours each on Monday and Tuesday? I was continuously available to anybody who wanted to just say "hi" or cover their asses and pass the responsibility to me from 7AM Monday to 6PM tonight.

I typically average 45-50 per week, but I was a good bit higher last week. It's not that I mind *some* extra hours, it's just I've tried to avoid going overboard in the past. Returning to my college record of something like 70 hours straight awake is not something I yearn for.

I should say, your hours explain your erratic posting presence a bit.

I don't pretend this is a normal schedule for most people. When my wife was working three days a week she told me that was more than half the days of the week. When I told her three was less than half of seven she told me that just because I did it didn't mean it was normal.

I'm more active on io9 and the o-deck.

It's been a long time since I trolled io9 in the persona of Cave Johnson. Maybe I should do that again.

I've never understood why this was acceptable in medicine.

It makes no sense to me that people that use their brains for a living are asked to deny themselves sleep, and basically put their health at risk, instead of working a more "normal" routine.

Many reasons. Cheap labor. The thought that you learn well when you are the last line of defense. An attempt to cram 6 years of experience into 3 calendar years. "I did it, so you will too." Mostly cheap labor, I think. Where I trained, the interns did a lot of things that nurses get paid to do in non teaching hospitals like starting IVs, drawing blood, placing urinary catheters. We made less money and had no union.

It is different now. Work hour limits, IV teams, night float. Kids are coddled these days (cf: I did it, so you will too).

That's enlightening, thanks for replying.

"Doctors as cheap labor" is not a concept many of us would have dreamed of.

Most of them graduate medical school, four years out of college, never having made money except in summer jobs, six figures in debt. Then they get paid less than their friends made four years earlier just out of college with lesser degrees. They get paid that for three to 8 years, depending on their chosen field. I don't know what wages are now, but I was 31 before I made more than $40k a year. I've made up for it since and I won't be slaving away till I'm 70, but I feel like I paid my dues as Jack Burton would say.
